Gothic Mede Academy

Year 4 - Birch & Hazel

The summer term started with a bang and a very successful PGL trip. We were so proud of each and every child who attended. They took on challenges, faced their fears, lived the values of Gothic Mede and, most of all, had fun! We really enjoyed sharing this time with Year 4 and hope they made as many happy memories as we did.

This term PE days have swapped with premier sports teaching outdoor PE on a Monday, focusing on athletics and sports day practise. Indoor PE will now be on a Friday and we will be teaching Yoga. In English, we will be learning a range of topics, starting with a poem based on rivers, followed by a diary recount, narrative story writing and finally, exploring persuasive writing.

In maths, we will continue our learning of decimals and then will be covering money, time, shape, statistics and finally position and direction. This term will also see year 4 take part in the multiplication check which will take place over a period of 2 weeks starting on Monday 2nd June 2025. Please encourage your child to be practising on TT rockstars as often as possible. During the check, they will be asked to answer 25 questions and will have 6 seconds to answer each question. Soundcheck offers a very similar example to what the check will be like.

In history, the children will be exploring how children’s lives have changed over time, making observations and deductions from sources, how Lord Shaftesbury changed the lives of children and evaluating the impact of his work. They will also be identifying leisure activities and diseases from the past as well as discussing the effectiveness of the treatments used.

In art, children will be exploring painting and mixed media. Using black or white paint to create tints and shade, and exploring how colour can be used to show light and dark.

Over this term, we will spend time preparing your child for their transition to middle school. This will involve us as teachers meeting with your child’s new school and discussing how your child can best be supported as they move on to the next stage in their schooling journey. They will also be invited to attend a sports day, on Friday 20th June, with children from other schools to give them an opportunity to meet others who may be attending their school.  They will also have the charity Making me Visit School on Tuesday 1st July to discuss any transition worries. Staff from PBA and ETA will be attending GMA to meet the children (date to be confirmed) and answer any questions they may have. On Friday 4th July, year 4 children will be invited to attend their new school for a step-up day.
