Acorn Nursery
Welcome to the home page of Acorn Nursery Class.
We run two sessions for the children to spend 15 hours in Acorn class. Acorn A is the beginning of the week and the children attend all day on Monday, Tuesday and for two hours on Wednesday morning. Acorn B is the end of the week and the children attend for two hours on Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday and Friday.
The Nursery has a very experienced Early Years team. Mrs Lewis is the Acorn Class Teacher. She is usually in class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mrs Pang and Mrs Godfrey are the full time Early Years Practitioners in Acorn class and lead on the days that Mrs Lewis is not in class. Mrs Douglas is a Teaching Assistant who is usually in class on Tuesdays and Fridays when Mrs Lewis is out of class.
Our curriculum is based on the new revised EYFS Framework 2021 and covers seven areas of learning and development:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal Social and Emotional development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
We believe that children learn best through a combination of child initiated play, structured play activities and adult focused teaching sessions. Children have free access to the whole Nursery, including the outside area, throughout the majority of the session where there are resources and activities to develop all areas of learning. Staff carefully observe and support the children during their child initiated play in order to identify their interests and next steps for learning. Short, daily, adult focused teaching sessions enable the children to develop their skills in areas such as Phonics and Maths, as well as other areas of learning. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, children learn through playing, exploring and being active, and through creative and critical thinking, which takes place both indoors and outside.
We also have a strong focus on how our children learn and this supported by our Learning Zoo characters and I am sure the children will come home telling you about some of the characters such as Go for it Gorilla, Preserving Parrot and Concentrating Crocodile!
