Year 1 - Beech & Elm
Happy Easter everyone! We hope you have all had a fun and happy holiday.
Our summer term is looking wonderfully busy and exciting. The term kicks off with a Dino Dig in the first week back. We have absolutely no idea what the children will uncover! We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to our Year one assembly "Around the World in 30 minutes" on 13th May at 2.45. We hope it will give you a good idea of some of our learning this year and will give the children a really positive experience of saying their lines/acting to a large audience. In the second half of the term we will be practising hard in a very different way.... for Sports Day! Weather permitting, this will take place on Wednesday 2nd July. Again, we hope that as many of you as possible are able to support our budding athletes. A further date for the diary is Tuesday 17th June when we will be taking the children on a trip to the Forest Centre at Marston Moretaine. We were so impressed by the children's behaviour and how they lived our school values when we visited St Peter's Church last term, that we are sure this trip will be a great success too. The trip links closely into our Science unit this term which is all about plants as well as providing practical links to learning in the spring term about animals.
So what are we going to be learning in our other subjects?
Well, in English we are going on a journey into space as our first unit is based on the wonderful Oliver Jeffers book "The Way Back Home". Linked in to Arts Around the World week (wc 2nd June) we will be finding out about Australia and writing about the Great Barrier Reef and other important places in Australia. The children have already expressed great interest in the landscape and animals of Australia from when we read Wombat Goes Walkabout so we are sure they will enjoy looking at the country in more detail.
In Maths we will be extending our knowledge of number as we look at the place value of numbers up to 100 and find out about halves and quarters of shapes, objects and numbers before moving on to finding out about the denominations of notes and coins. Towards the end of the term we will be introducing the children to telling the time - an aspect of Maths that the children are extremely excited about! White Rose home learning videos can help support your child with all of these topics. Click here for the videos.
In Geography we will be investigating a variety of different habitats as we consider where in the world different animals live. This ties in neatly with our summer star challenge in which the children will be choosing their favourite continent and researching into an animal that is native to that continent.
Our PE days continue to be Wednesday and Friday but this term indoor PE will be on Wednesdays (focusing on dance and yoga), and outdoor PE on Fridays.
In Art this half term we are going to have great fun in our unit "Paper Play" as we create 3d sculptures using paper and card. In the second half of the term in DT (Design Technology) we are going to be experimenting with making smoothies. We are looking forward to your children coming up with some wonderful taste sensations!
There are many other exciting learning opportunities for us this half term. Have a look at our long term plan on the curriculum page for further details.
We are very keen that your child feels happy and secure at school so if there is ever anything that you would like to discuss with us concerning your child's welfare or academic progress, please do not hesitate to catch us at the gate at the end of the day or contact the office to make a more in-depth appointment with us.
Happy summer term everyone!
